Children & the Arts

A long long time before modern wonders such as the motion picture and the television set, in a dark age before the first book or the first play was ever performed, before the existence of scrolls, the good people of the earth had only one way to stir the soul and fire the imagination, one way to unite mankind the world over with a bond stronger than the hard back book......stories!

StoryQuest

StoryQuest 2007

StoryQuest is a national festival of storytelling which aims to teach children about the joys of narrative and to encourage families and communities to share stories.

StoryQuest 2007 launched with Family Storytelling Day on November 2nd when all families were encouraged to sit down together and tell the stories of their family, including tales about those that have gone before, perhaps over old photograph albums. One family told us:

On the evening of November 2nd, we lit a fire in our front room and placed on our hearth a photo of my Mother’s Mother and the Common Prayer book which belonged to her Mother in 1828. I spent about 20 minutes telling my wife and three children all the stories I remembered about them and was surprised by how much I remembered. Thank you very much for being the inspiration for a new family tradition.

Throughout November 2007 StoryQuest events took place in cultural venues around the UK. Every StoryQuest event aimed to create the magical moment when a story fires the imagination. Everyone who ran a StoryQuest event was encouraged to enter a competition to win a site-specific storytelling commission. We are delighted to announce that Stoke-on-Trent Museums Service won the 2007 competition with their inventive storytelling events involving storyteller ‘Toby Jugg’ who told tales of the city’s pottery industry heritage.

We hope to re-run StoryQuest in 2008. Please keep checking back to this page for more details.

StoryQuest has its own website where anyone wanting to plan their own storytelling event can get advice and tips www.storyquest.org.uk
