Children & the Arts

"The arts help to define the “you-ness” of you."

Ghislaine Kenyon, Arts Education Consultant

Create-a-Quest

In 2008 Children & the Arts created a new project called Create-a-Quest, sponsored by Land Securities. Create-a-Quest was a UK-wide programme which linked 16 arts organisations with local primary schools and a local sponsor shopping centre.

The project launched with teacher training days in July 2008, supported by a specially produced book for teachers full of inspiring ideas to use in the classroom. Through the Autumn and Winter terms, a programme of visits and workshops introduced thousands of children from 42 schools around the UK to one or two art forms as they get to know and feel more comfortable in their local partner cultural venue. The range of venues involved included art galleries, museums, theatres, historic houses and concert halls.

The project culminated in a grand finale held at St Mary’s Church, London on Tuesday 10th February 2009 to celebrate the work that all the children had created. Those that attended were able to look around an exhibition of drawings, poems, sculptures, models and crafts. They were also treated to some very special schools performances of dance, poetry, theatre and music. A very proud day for all involved.

Donal McCabe, Director of Corporate Communications at Land Securities said:

“Land Securities wants its shopping centres to be a partner of the communities they serve, not just a place that happens to be there.  Working with Create-a-Quest we aim to help local school children enjoy themselves while learning about both themselves and the arts.”

This is the fourth year that Land Securities has supported the work of Children & the Arts.
