A Teacher’s Story

Start, Unity Theatre, Liverpool

“We forget how the experience of live theatre is not the ‘norm’ in many children’s lives. The in-house drama workshops and two theatre visits provided by Unity Theatre as part of our Start project captivated our pupil’s imaginations and generated an interest in further visits to see live performances. Our school now has a regular live theatre club, which organises visits to various theatre venues.

The highlight was when a group of disaffected Year Eight students accepted the opportunity to watch Aida at the Liverpool Empire Theatre. Staff and parents were amazed at their positive response. This would not have occurred had we not been participating in the Start project for two years, as this helped us to create a culture of theatre visits being a positive and accessible experience.

The spinoff effects have been remarkable as evidenced by the journey made from a Unity Theatre Christmas Show to appreciation of Verdi’s Aida and a request for CD copies of seminal opera arias.”
