‘Young people’s aspirations in rural areas’, a report conducted by NFER on behalf of LG Group, examines whether young people from rural areas have lower than average aspirations.
The report found that young people living in rural areas tended to have realistic aspiration based on their own skills and abilities, although a minority were found to be setting their sights lower than their grade would allow.
The report states that aspirations are continually changing, and that parents and other individuals such as employers and youth club leaders have the most influence over them. The report recommends that in order to raise aspirations, young people need more opportunities to come into contact with adults that can inspire them.
