Start - how you can get involved

“We have been able to develop better ways of working with our exhibition programme.  The three year funding has enabled a reflective process of review and progression that has influenced our wider programme for schools”   De la Warr Pavilion

Start provides primary and secondary school students who might never otherwise have the chance, the opporunity to engage with the arts. At the heart of Start is our desire to make cultural venues accessible for a new generation.

About Start

The Start Programme is a framework that can be used by arts organisations to engage young people with all aspects of the arts. It is a series of stepping stones based on four key themes:

Introducing young people to the arts;
Inspiring them to learn more;
Enhancing their experience through critical analysis and participation; and
Encouraging them to Create their own art.

The themes are explored by the young person through at least two visits to their partner cultural organisation to see professional performances, concerts or exhibitions and educational work that links to and supports these visits.

The Start programme aims to encourage students to develop the confidence and enthusiasm to continue their engagement with their local cultural venue beyond the life of an individual project.

Applications for our Start programme are now closed for the year, and will re-open in December.
