Ysgol Pen y Bryn from Colwyn Bay, North Wales travelled to London on 25th September to see the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra perform a composition of their own creation at the Classic FM Live Concert at The Royal Albert Hall.
As the winners of the MusicQuest competition 2007, run alongside MusicQuest, Pen y Bryn were also given £10,000 worth of musical instruments.
The year 6 students arrived at the Royal Albert Hall in the afternoon to watch the orchestra rehearse Pen y Bryn Carnival, before a back stage tour of the venue, where they bumped into tenor and Children & the Arts ambassador Alfie Boe! The school then attended the concert in the evening along with 5,000 other Classic FM supporters.
Bethen Jones, Musical Coordinator at Ysgol Pen-Y-Bryn said: It was an experience I will treasure always as I know the children will. They loved every moment of it and were thrilled with the concert and of course very proud and amazed when they heard their own composition. There are at least 30 pupils from Colwyn Bay aged 9-10 who are totally convinced that classical music is cool and can’t wait for similar experiences to widen their horizons and develop their interest further. Thank you so much for giving them (and me) such a wonderful opportunity.
Ysgol Pen y Bryn were one of the 88 schools across the UK who were involved in MusicQuest 2007. MusicQuest is a four year project introduces children right around the UK to classical music. Each year Children & the Arts – with support from Classic FM Music Makers and instruments and practical support provided by Yamaha - take classical musicians into schools and theatres as part of MusicQuest, reaching around 5,000 young people between the ages of 7 and 11.
