Musical instruments supplied by Yamaha Music UK are awarded to UK school children who took part in a competition as part of Children & the Arts’ project MusicQuest funded by Classic FM Music Makers. The competition which explored the children’s creativity and compositional skills was open to the 88 schools involved in MusicQuest 2007/08.
First prize has been awarded to Ysgol Pen Y Bryn in Colwyn Bay, Wales for their composition entitled Pen-y-Bryn Carnival based on ‘The Carnival’ from Stravinsky’s ballet, Petrushka. As the winning entry, their composition will be performed by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra at the Classic FM Live concert at The Royal Albert Hall on 25th September 2008. They will also receive £10,000 worth of musical instruments.
“Rhythmic flavours, variety of musical colours, harmony interest and a feeling of truly organised music-making. A real team effort and most enjoyable listen.” Kevin Hathaway, Co-Percussionist at the Philharmonia Orchestra, MusicQuest Conductor and judge of the MusicQuest competition said of the winning entry.
The regional runners up, who will each receive £1,000 worth of musical instruments, are; Claremont Primary School (Blackpool), St Josephs RC Primary (Dartford), Craigie Primary School (Perth), and Ysgol Craig-y-don (North Wales). In Warwick there was a tie between two schools; St Bartholomew’s Primary School and Sydenham Primary School. Each will receive £500.
